6163: WEEK 2 :MY PERSONAL RESEARCH JOURNEY

Hello Classmates,

Poverty is what I chose to focus on for my topic. It hurts so many but especially children. I plan to discuss the many areas that touch children’s lives. Childhood Poverty Research and Policy Center (2004) states, “In most cases, children’s experiences of poverty depend on the situation of their family. Moreover, Family access to material and social resources has significant impact on children’s well-being” (p. 14). Poverty hits families and they may work two jobs but still cannot afford to live day to day. Things cost so much now and working families fall under the level of poverty. Most do not understand the different faces of poverty -in depth. Therefore, I plan on shining a light on it. Knowledge is the key to helping solve any negative situation.

I am asking you all for any insights or advice on my topic. If you know of any websites that will be helpful to me, please let me know -as soon as possible.

My personal simulation process was somewhat okay for me to decide on what I wanted to research. By looking at people on the streets or just living in bad situations, I wanted to discuss in detail what defines poverty. By understanding what situation a child may be in their home, professionals can know what will help them best. Educators give out so many forms that families must fill out and we have to pay attention more and where we can help out or provide information, we must be willing to go that extra step. We have to look for clues and know when to recognize them. In addition, I read the necessary chapters in our textbook and defined definitions for myself so that I can understand how to conduct my research. I still have a ways to go until I feel comfortable with researching but I feel that I am headed in the right direction.

  1. Nakita,
Poverty is a broad topic it might be easier for you to narrow your topic down to one area of poverty such as, what causes poverty, education, policy, and health. Since you said you want to focus on children here are a few questions you might consider. Remember you need a question before you can start your research.
Does poverty affect younger children differently than older children?
What are the outcomes for children living in chronic poverty?
What is the success rate of graduating from high school for children living in poverty?
Whatever question you ponder you have to decide what approach you want to use quantitative or qualitative. You probably want to use the quantitative approach because you are drawing conclusions about the cause and effect of poverty; this research would require you to interview parents and teachers multiple times to collect data on these children to see the outcomes of this research, this type of research is called longitudinal research. Don’t freak out because I said you have to interview parents and teachers; this is a simulation so you will not literally interview anyone. I hope this information was helpful. The National Center for Children in Poverty is a good resource. The website is listed below.

  3. Nakita,

I am going to be interested to see where your research takes you since we have a similar subject. I narrowed down my focus to the effects of early childhood intervention programs. I found a great good article that actually followed a group of urban youths from Chicago for 15 years and analyzed the benefits. Good luck and I will let you know if I come up with some resources.

  4. Hi Nakita,

Poverty is a serious matter facing young children today. I also chose poverty. As I was doing my research, I found it to be a vast problem. There are many topics about poverty and the effect it has on children. I had to narrow my topic down. Below I put a website that I was researching. I hope it helps you. I will surely pass on more information as I am researching.

  5. Hi Nakita
Poverty is such a cruel situation and nobody should be living like that especially children. This country has enough resources to take care of all the children and more. It will be very interesting to see what you discover on this simulation. Poverty affects all aspects of the child's life from prenatal to adulthood because it stems from the parents position. If I come across anything in my search I will definitely send it on to you. All the best.
